Parish History

Our Parish is an offshoot of Palarivattom Sharon Mar Thoma Church. In the early 1990's, about 45 families of Sharon Marthoma Church were settled scattered at various locations of Thrikkakara - Kakkanad area. In those days due to various practical difficulties, many of the families could not attend the worships regularly nor their children could attend the Sunday School classes. Thus most of these members cherished a plan to start a new parish at Kakkanad area. They placed the daunting task before God Almighty through continuous prayers. Members of Palarivattom parish wholeheartedly supported this thinking and a committee was constituted to find a suitable site and decide on the future plans. Rev. John John, the then vicar of the Sharon M T church, served as the President and Mr George Varghese as the convener of the committee. Mr C.J.John, Mr Tharyan Mathew, Mr K.K.George, Mr M.K.George, Comdr. P.C. Andrews and Mr Tharyan Abraham were other members of the committee. Adv. Prasad Mathew, Dr Philip Abraham, Mr Ninan K Eapen and a few other members of the prayer group also actively participated in the task with conviction.

By the grace of God and with the strenuous efforts of the above committee and others, 38 cents of land was purchased on 17th June 1992. Later Rev. T.K.John, the then vicar of Sharon MTC Palarivattom and Mr Chandy Oommen were sent to Kuwait with the purpose of raising funds from well-wishers and they collected a sum of about 4 lakhs. As per the decision of the Edavaka Sangam of Palarivattom Sharon MTC, the foundation stone of the church building was laid on 1st May 1994 by Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Episcopa in the presence of Rt. Rev. Dr Euyakim Mar Coorilos Episcopa. The project was named as "Mar Thoma Church Welfare Centre". With the active participation of all members of the congregation and with the generous support from members of Sharon MTC and other parishes in the Kochi area, the ground floor of the present church building was completed.

On 30th March 1997, the Easter Sunday, Rev. T.V. Thomas led the first worship service and Rev. T.K.John conducted the first Holy Communion Service. By that time, 71 families were transferred to the new Parish from Sharon MTC Palarivattom and Rev. D. Alexander, the then vicar of Sharon MTC Palarivattom, was appointed the first vicar of Christos Mar Thoma Church.

The 2nd phase of construction work was started on 9th September 1998, under the leadership of Rev. D. Alexander, vicar and Mr M.K.George as Convener. In addition to the Formation Committee, Mr.V.O.Samuel, Dr K.G.Johnson, Mr D.George, Mr E.D.Mathew, Mr John Thomas, Mrs Geetha John, and many others actively participated in the completion of the Church Building. Mr Jacob George (Suresh) rendered valuable contribution as the architect.

On Saturday, the 26th May 2001, the completed Church Complex was dedicated by Most. Rev. Dr Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Valia Metropolitan in the presence of Rt.Rev.Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Episcopa and Rt. Rev. Dr Euyakim Mar Coorilos Episcopa. The first Holy Communion service in the present church building was conducted by Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Episcopa on 27th May 2001 at 7.30 a.m.

Many of our earlier members, who strived for forming the church and developing to this stage, have been taken to the heavenly abode. We remember them with utmost affection and gratitude and praise God for their commitment. The untiring leadership and strenuous efforts of our first vicar Rev.D.Alexander played a major role in completing the church complex and nurturing it as a unified and fast-growing parish in the heart of the fast developing cyber city. The dedicated services of other vicars and also those of our retired Achens Rev. Mathew Varghese and Rev. John John have immensely contributed for the spiritual and physical growth of the church.

The Church building soon began to show signs of renovation on the rooftop of the church. Seeing the state of the rooftop, it was decided to renovate the building with the essentials. On the basis of the decision taken by the Edavaka Sangam on 9th December 2018, the renovation of the Church Building and Madbaha was started on 9th January 2019, under the leadership of Vicar, Rev. P. J. John, and Construction Convener, Mr. John Thomas (Noel). With the full support of all the members of our Parish, Executive Committee, Construction Committee, Finance Committee, Office Bearers and Vicars Rev. P. J. John and Rev. John Geevarghese, we could complete the renovation of the Church Building, the new rooftop, and the Madbaha along with the installation of the Lift, Digitalised Audio system Console for better audio clarity, LED Wall for better display and a single Big Fan for better natural airflow in the Church. The renovation work completed on time in spite of many external factors and the dedication was blessed by His Grace The Most Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan on 3rd January 2020.
